View Full Version : need help with Spss
wanye 09-12-2006, 08:39 AM hi all,
i need help on analysing the attached data below using ANOVA TEST in SPSS to find out the relationship btw
1)the average number of purchases per quarter with customer’s marital status and Premier membership status
2)whether there is an interaction effect between marital status and Premier membership status
Can someone pls guide me on how to generate and read the SPSS output to ans the two questions above? Thx in advance!
Given that the legend for the variables inside the data:
1. idnum = identification number
2. expend = average expenditure per month
3. numpur = average number of purchases per quarter
4. age = age of customer
5. gender = gender of customer
6. income = annual income of customer
7. race = race of customer
8. marital = marital status of customer
9. member = whether customer is a Premier member
JohnM 09-12-2006, 11:22 AM Here's a link to a very thorough PowerPoint file that walks you through how to do a factorial ANOVA in SPSS.
If you don't have MS PowerPoint, you can download PowerPoint Reader from Microsoft for free.

elnaz 09-13-2006, 12:32 PM Hello
please attend , when you can use ANOVA that your data are normal
then the first you should test of normality and if there were normal , use Anova , i did test of normality for your data there are not normal please you check it too and if they were not normal so use cox box transformation if your data could not be normal then you should use nonparametric test for them .
JohnM 09-13-2006, 12:56 PM Unless the departure from normality is severe, however, there's little risk in using ANOVA because of the robustness of ANOVA and the central limit theorem.
Generally I'm not in favor of transforming data because it then makes interpretation and reporting difficult.
wanye 09-14-2006, 04:52 AM hi all, I have generated an output based on the tutorial which JohnM sent me, but I am not sure whether I am on right track. Below attached is my output file from SPSS.
How do I actually read and analyse the output, which are the things that I shld take note of, so as to answer my 2 qtns above?
1)relationship btw the average number of purchases per quarter with customer’s marital status and Premier membership status
2)whether there is an interaction effect between marital status and Premier membership status
elnaz 09-15-2006, 11:42 PM Hello
the first i think you should read my written too and the second please you copy your output on microsoft word then send again
wanye 09-16-2006, 10:32 AM Hi Elnaz,
I have read your post but since JohnM has mentioned that Anova test can be used and there isnt a need for data transformation unless the departure from normality is severe, so I think its ok to carry out the test.
btw I have converted my spss output to a word doc, how do I interpret it?
elnaz 09-19-2006, 10:47 PM Hello
i had a mistake , i think your question is about oneway ANOVA
but your question its another thing sorry for that but about your answer , before doing you should verify them boxplot
that you dont do that, this doing is for verifying existance of extreme values on your data that you did not do that and i advice you
please read this book , its very very good book in working with SPSS
its titele is :
SPSS for windows made simple release 10
its author: Gary ,Calino and Kinnear ,Paul R
then you read 8th chapter .
wanye 09-20-2006, 12:19 PM hi Elnaz... sry that I dont really understand what you mean.
I really need someone to help me or at least teach me how to interpret the results that i get from the output. Or are there any really good sites that teaches you how to interpret spss output results??? Are that any experts out there who are good at interpreting SPSS results?
JohnM 09-20-2006, 12:50 PM If you Google the terms SPSS and ANOVA and output, you will get links to many tutorial pages:

here's a link to a thorough PowerPoint file:

and another link (looks very good):

wanye 09-27-2006, 04:01 AM hi all,
based on what I analyse from the spss output for these 2 qtns:
1)The relationship btw average number of purchases per quarter with customer’s marital status and Premier membership status
The average number of purchase will be twice for customer's martial status and premier membership status than customers that are single and with no premier membership.
2) There is no interaction effect as value of R-square is lesser than the sig.
Can someone pls tell me whether I am on the right track?
