    Discrete or Continuous?

on average, how many cigarettes do you smoke per day?

    is it discrete or continuous?

the thing that trips me out is the "average". some are saying discrete though. any advice?
    thanks in advance

    Re: Discrete or Continuous?

The distribution of "cigarettes smoked per day" is a discrete distribution , i.e. a distribution over the integers (assuming you can't smoke 0.35 of a cigarette). But that doesn't mean that every quantity associated with it is an integer. If you have two subjects, one smoking 1 c/d and the other smoking 2 c/d, the the average, for example, is 1.5 c/d.

As used in probability theory, the discrete/continuous disctinction is about the set that the probability distribution is defined on, not just any old quantity.
