Help correlating Likert scale data with demographic profile

I'm not knowledgeable about statistics, so please excuse any mistakes in phrasing. Our professor is currently on leave, and I don't have anybody else to ask about this.

I need to find out whether there is a relationship between demographic characteristics such as age/monthly income and the data from a Likert scale denoting the factors considered in choosing to eat a certain restaurant, e.g. friendly staff, speed of service. I was advised to use Spearman's rho, and I have a copy of SPSS. How do I input the data?

Much thanks in advance to anybody who can help. I really need to finish this.

I beleive (depending on the version you're using) you should go to "Correlate -> Bivariate...".

Then you select the variables you want to correlate in the window box that appeared. Move then to the box that says "variables" (use the arrow).

Finally, set a checkmark in the "Spearman" checkbox, and your done ... just click OK.

Repeat this for the variable of interest.

You could also make scatter plots of your variables first though and then visually determining if there is something - testing the relationship with a correlation analysis afterwards.

thank you! however, the data isn't properly paired up. what should i be putting in? the frequency per age interval (e.g. n=17 for 20-25) and the scale value for the Likert? i'm sorry, i'm really clueless about this. could you please give me an idea of how it's supposed to look in the spreadsheet, or explain which parts of the data i'm supposed to input?

    again, thank you.

Oke so how does your data look?

Do you have something like this?

    Code:
    income Likert
    3400 4
    5600 3
    ....
Or do you have something like this:

    Code:
    incomegroup n average likert
    2000-3500 12 3.3
    4500-6000 10 4.4
    ect
