    selecting randomly from a sample

    Hi,

I have a sample of 400 observations. if I want to select randomly 100 out of the 400. could I have 5000 different combinations of the elements of the 100 selected? (i.e when i select the 100 5000 times,is their a high probability that these 100s would be different from each other?)

The number of possible 100-item samples from a set of 400 is extremely large, so it's almost a guarantee that the 5000 samples will be different from each other.

According to my calculator there are 2 X 10^96 different combinations of 400 taking 100 at a time....yes a good large number.
