    Preference - which statistical method?

I'm conducting an experiment on female preference with respect to male colouration (black vs. white male mice). The results of the experiment include ~70 different trials. In each trial, a female was exposed to either a black or a white male and we observed if mating was successful or not (YES or NO). I hypothesized that mating preference would be greater with white mice. Which statistical method can I use to test if there will be more matings with white males than black males?

Sounds like a Chisquare test on a 2x2 contingency table will do.

Does the chi square method only test for independence b/w two variables or can it also address the question of which is greater or less (mating with white males was greater than black ones)?

It would test the hypothesis that the proportion is different. Personally I think it's probably better to do a two sided test (which this is). But once you do the test if you get a significant result you can look at the proportions to see which one was higher.
