Do both variables need to be nominal to use cross-tabs with chi-square?

I would like to use Cross-tabs with Chi-Square to examine the relationship between one nominal variable (gender: male-0 female-1) and one ordinal variable (satisfaction: 1-very dissatisfied 2..3..4..5-very satisfied).

Can I recode the ordinal variable (satisfaction) to a nominal dummy variable (0-dissatisfied and 1 satisfied) so that I can use Cross-tabs with Chi-Square?

Or, can I just leave satisfaction as ordinal?

    Thanks in advance.
