# Thread: Need help with point estimate problem

1. ## Need help with point estimate problem

The problem is 459 selected light bulbs were tested in a laboratory, 291 lasted more than 500 hours. Find a point estimate of the true proportion of all light bulbs that last more than 500 hours.

I started the problem by dividing

291/459 = 0.63

1-.63 = .37

Next I attempted to solve the problem

0.63 + 0.37/2=

After doing this my answer was incorrect. What am I doing wrong.

2. You needed to stop right here:

291/459 = 0.63

It only asks you to estimate the percentage of light bulbs that last more than 500 hours.....

3. Thank You.

4. ## Re: Need help with point estimate problem

The problem i have states
As part of a class project students measured the circumferences of a random sample of 45 blue spruce trees near Brainard Lake, CO. Based on the sample collected the mean circumference was 29.8 inches and the standard deviation was 7.2 inches.
a. find the point of estimate of the mean circumference of all the blue spruce trees near the lake ( use the correct symbols)
