basic question about variance of categorical data

So I have some data regarding items people have selected, and the people are separated into groups. I'm interested in whether or not one group has more variance than the other (one group selects a wider array of the same items). I'm a little unclear on how to do this with categorical data. Is this even possible? It seems like someone would have done something like this before. Any advice?
