I am wondering if someone might be able to advise me on the best method of looking at the progression of athletes over time. For example I have a data set of 40,000 athletes who have competed in competitions from 2004 to 2011. What I want to look at is the progression of individual athletes over time, their progression through the grades (i.e. from the low to high levels) and how long it has taking atheltes to progress, also identifying athletes who have not progress and have remained at a certain level.
Each competition consists of three parts and scores and added up to give a total score for the athlete on the day.
My dataset is similiar to this example:
Name Event Date Event Name Grade Part1 Part2 Part3 Total Score
Ann 3/2/2005 Dublin 1 10 15 10 35
Mary 1/4/2006 Dublin 2 5 10 15 30
John 8/9/2009 London 1 6 12 12 30
Brian 2/2/2011 Paris 3 10 10 20 40
Alan 4/5/2007 Berlin 2 20 20 30 70
Sue 6/8/2004 London 2 50 10 5 65
Ann 5/6/2009 London 2 20 20 10 50
Pat 4/3/2005 Paris 4 15 15 15 45
Emer 2/3/2009 Nice 3 12 20 8 40
Pat 5/9/2004 Dublin 3 10 10 10 40
I have never ran an analysis similiar to this before so I am unsure how to go about it but the type of output I would be looking for would similiar to:
Ann Grade 1 2005-2009
Ann Grade 2 2009 - to present
basicially what I need to find out id how long it takes athletes to progress from one grade to another & how long they remain at each grade for.
Any help you might be able to give would really be appreciated.
