Linear regression vs ancova - when to use which

Hi all, I have some data on species richness, latitude and temperature. In the past on this sort of data I have used multi-linear regression. But it was suggest that maybe I use ancova for this. As far as I can see from my web research both would be satisfactory, but I'm not really sure as to when to use one over the other.

I've run both tests, multi-regression both lat and temp where significant predictors of species richness, but using ancova latitude was the only significant predictor..

Am I doing something wrong? When I turn latitude into a catagorical value i.e. north OR south (hemisphere) both latitude and temperature are predictors..

    Confused much? - I am..

Can you specify what your models are? Because both regression and ancova are special cases of just a "linear model".
I don't have emotions and sometimes that makes me very sad.
