I'm working with STATA a lot and since I have to work with larger data sets from different sources I've experienced that most of them aren't offering specific .dta files of the data. If I'm lucky they offer a .sav file but most of the time, it's just .xls and I'm having serous trouble letting STATA import large data sets from .xls (lots of wrong going on).
I'm looking for something that just works and doesn't require much work.
I use it occasionally for transferring data both to and from Stata. It works really well, including for large datasets. It's quite easy to use and there is the option to script it if you're doing repetitive transfers, ie you can create a batch file. I've used the Mac and Linux versions which are very similar. I think they release a new version with each version of Stata, so you may need a (paid) upgrade if you want to keep up with the latest Stata dataset format. There is academic pricing available.
Why don't you try it and see whether it works for you? You can download a free trial. According to their website the trial is "a complete, functioning copy, except that one out of about every sixteen cases will not be transferred."
