Creating a score out of a "select all that apply" question

    Dear Omniscienti,

I asked the following question as my dependent variable:

Which, if any, of the following actions has your household taken to reduce water use? Please select all that apply.

     Replaced toilet(s) with low-flow model(s)
     Replaced faucet(s) with low-flow model(s)
     Replaced shower head(s) with low-flow model(s)
     Purchased “water-saving” dishwasher
     Purchased “water-saving” clothes washer
 Changed landscaping [Please Answer Question 4]
 Installed water saving irrigation timer
 Installed water saving irrigation nozzles
     Fixed leaks
     Reduced water in pool
     None
     Other (please specify) ________________________

I need to somehow take the responses and turn them into a single variable for evaluation. Do I weight each response based on the expected cost and expected water savings? I am lost as to how to approach this unit of analysis...

    Thank you for your replies!
