That would completely depend on your interests!
If you want to do a phd better get a topic you are fascinated about!

So which aspects of biostatistics have always fascinated you?
What are the big questions you would like to help solve?
What aspects of your supervisors work do you find really attractive?
What biostatistical breakthrough are you dreaming about?

These are the questions you need to answer for yourself.

Nobody here can tell you what you need to get passionate about, so start thinking, plotting, scheming and most importantly dreaming

    Good luck,

There are four general theories here I think (my Phd is in a totally different area).

    1) something you are interested in
    2) something that increases the chance you will get hired after you graduate
    3) something that can be done quickly
    4) something your chair is interested in

noetsi's options are not always mutually exclusive. And don't forget, something you can get paid for.

True, they are not. But commonly one of them will be the dominant one. I chose mine at the spur of the moment because I was under presure to do something by my chair But ignored the common warning about doing a project that had no readily available data and thus took far far longer to get done than those who did not violate it.

Bells and whistles are great when you have a job. Not to get a phd done.

I think that #4 from noetsi's is the most pertinent but another option may be to discuss with programs within your uni/facility to identify what you need to address #4 in a way that hits the other three things as well. If you have a strong Epi department try to see what you could do to take on an epi problem (biomarker research comes to mind and iirc penalized methodology is an area that may grow) or cancer pharmacology which is always strong and most states have internal research databases.

    That's a thought anyways.

What was the reason u have decided to become a phd student? If u have the answer at this question, u have the research topic as well

    Good luck!
