    Creative solution for ill-planned trial?

    Dear all,
This is my first post. This is a great forum. I am facing a problem: I have some really cool health data but it was not collected from a well planned trial. Since the data I have is a bit sensitive I will give you a similar example.

The "trial" had no placebo group. Patient were given a pain-killer drug 1mg pills and they were told they could take up to 5mg if they want to. They could take any and every day, up to them. The patients recorded their pain level and their intake every single day for 120 days. I plan to analyze the data at the individual level to make sure fixed effects are taken care of; also for other reasons.

My main problem is of course endogeneity: patients are more likely to take the drug (and higher doses) when they have pain. I know this is challenging but there must be a way to go around it right? knowing the half life of the drug would be useful, and one could lag, but I am thinking if there is a well thought method for these kinds of problems.

    Your help is MOST appreciated.

    Thanks

    Tim

Difficult without a placebo group. I guess you don't have a pain score before intervention?
