    Method of sampling

If 25 people sign up for a workshop which has room for only 10, the naive way to select 10 is to put 25 numbers in a hat and choose 10 (assuming each person has an assigned number based on the order in which they signed up). However, it is easier to choose only one number from 1 to 25 and permit that person and the 9 which follow (in circular order) to join. This gives each individual an equal chance of winning a place, although of course not every group of individuals is possible. Does anyone know the name for this type of sampling?

If they signed up randomly then it is basically systematic sampling.

    hi,
this a pretty big if. I mean all sorts of correlation are possible in the list so with this method there would be a high risk of bias.
