# Thread: Probability for Denver and Seattle reaching the Super Bowl

1. ## Probability for Denver and Seattle reaching the Super Bowl

There are 16 teams in the American Football Conference, the Denver, Colorado Broncos being one. There are 16 teams in the National Football Conference, the Seattle, Washington Seahawks being one.

The Broncos and Seahawks each won their conference titles last night, and will face each other in next Sunday's Super Bowl. What's interesting here is that of our 50 U.S. states, Colorado and Washington are the only two who have legalized marijuana for adults over the age of 21. That seems a truly amazing coincidence.

So what, exactly, are the odds against that having happened? (I know this is probably an easy question, but math is definitely not my forte.)

You have to provide more info, since not all states have a professional team, while other states have multiple teams (latter may not come into play). Perhaps a table listing states and teams would be a nice start, since the denominator for number of states eligible needs to be known.

That is not amazing. For any pair of states you (probably) will find a characteristic
which they have in common and which all other states do not possess.

Well, if you had asked this before the start of the season, then a
probabilty calculation would have made sense.

Just my 2pence

What if we limit the probability calculation to the AFC and NFC, and do away with the U.S. states factor. So, what are the odds of two teams from each conference with a shard unique quality winning their conference title and facing each other in the Super Bowl?
