    -.00 or .00

    Hi,

I'm including a correlation table in a write-up and I'm sticking with two significant digits. One of my correlation coefficients is -.003.

    Should I be writing -.00 or .00?

    Thanks

The negative would just raise unneccesary eyebrows.

To solve this I would use scientific notation, this way you don’t loose any information. I mean that’s why it was invented in the first place.

    -3.0e-3 has two significant digits
-3.0 .10^-3 has two significant digits

In general leading zero's do not count as significant digits (but they do take up space). Trailing zero's however convey information on up to how many decimal place the measure is accurate, so you should especially watch out with those.

If your choice for two digits is only esthetic, and therefore has nothing to do with actual significant digits then stick to what rounds advises.
The true ideals of great philosophies always seem to get lost somewhere along the road..

Thank you for the two responses. That answers my question.

    I do appreciate the help!
