Hello, I'm doing something very similar with seagrass and bare sand substrates fish data and just wondering if you had any luck figuring out how to analyse the data? thanks, Helen

    Re: fish and seagrass help

I have 4 sites, 3 seagrass, 1 sand, sampled day and night on different months over a couple years. I am looking at fish abundance and diversity.

I have done Bray Curtis MDS and cluster plots using Primer for each month to try and show if there is difference in fish abundance between site. there was only clustering in one months data set.

I have also attempted GzLM on fish length data in SPSS to try and show if fish length is linked to site or time but think I have done it wrong and have no idea how to interpret the outputs. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks for the additional info Helen. Can you be a bit more specific about your research question?

Hmmm. Well its looking at whether seagrass beds act as commercial fish nurseries and if they are more important than bare sand.

If you are looking at several fish species, then PERMANOVA maybe the way forward. In this case, I would approriatly transform your data and conduct PERMANOVA with a-prior contrasts (i.e. seagrasa1, 2,and 3 vs. sand) and include time of day and season as covariates. The problem you are faced with is that you only have one sand site so esentillay an interpretation must take this into account.
