    The Probabiliy of Making it




    I have 1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9,10,11,12 teams. Only 8/12 teams make it to the playoffs. What is the probability that 3,4,5,8,9,10 are part of the 8 teams that make it to the playoffs? Given each team has 1/12 chance of making it.

    I solved it like this, (8 choose 6) /(12 choose 8) = 0.056. Is this correct?

    It should be

    \frac {\displaystyle \binom {6} {6} \binom {6} {2}} {\displaystyle \binom {12} {8}}

    You splitting the teams into two groups of 6 teams, namely

    3, 4, 5, 8, 9, 10 (the teams that required)

    1, 2, 6, 7, 11, 12 (the remaining teams that need to fill up the remaining two positions)
