    Smile Where Do I Start?




    I need assistance with the following problem:

    In 1960, census results indicated that the age at which American men first married had a mean of 23.3 years. It is widely suspected that young people today are waiting longer to get married. We want to find out if the mean age of first marriage has increased during the past 40 years. Suppose we collect a sample of 40 men and find that 55% of them got married beyond the age of 27. With a sig. level of .01, test the hypothesis that more than 50% of men get married beyond the age of 27.

    I have determined that the null hypothesis is more than 50% of men get married beyond the age of 27. I am unsure if I should use U or X and if I need to use the mean of 23.3 years when writing out the test.

    Any help provided would be appreciated. Thanks so much!

    You have frequency data here, so you'll have to
    use a test for frequencies.

    With repesct to the null hypothesis, the question is
    formulated awkwardly, at least in my opinion. Since
    one cannot test a working hypothesis ("proportion
    > 50%") , one has to set up and to test a null
    hypothesis (hypothesis to be nullified; e.g. "proportion
    <= 50%"). If the null hypothesis is rejected, one can
    accept the alternative.

    I agree that the question is also formulated awkwardly and it is causing me a lot of stress in determining how to test the hypothesis. What should I do next??

    I don't know. If possible, test the ("wrong") null hypothesis,
    as stated in the problem desription, and also test a null
    hypothesis which actually could help answering the research
    question.
