    Cool true hypothesis and errors??

    Ok...so i have a sample problem that asks to describe the circumstances under which a researcher would make a Type I and or Type II error in the context of this particular situation.
    I know what each error means, but how can i tell if i am making an error if i dont know what the true hypothesis is. I have a null and an alternate. That is it...no standard deviation, sample or population size. I do know it would be a one tailed upper critical test, and i am using a 0.05 level of sig. Im stuck as far the rest goes...any ideas?
    Thanks=)

    The question asks that i describe the circumstances under which a car manufactorer would make a type I and then type II error in the context of this situation, "Is the mean number of miles per gallon greater than 27.0 now that improvements have been made in the engine?"
    I am not supposed to go too in depth with the type of test used and everything, i just have to know how the errors could be made uner the abpve coricumstances...does that make sense??
    thanks!
