    Normal distribution for Ordinal data

I am busy analysing data from a 5 point Likert-scale, however I have no idea how to calculate the normality of the sample. The only formula that I have come accross in my stats books make use of the standard deviation, however to the best of my knowledge one cannot make use of a standard deviation when working with ordinal data? Any help would be greatly appreciated

Likert scale data can be treated as interval-level data in many, if not most cases. If you are not comfortable doing this (most often it is because of the nature of the underlying phenomenon being measured), then use the median and inter-quartile range.
