scatter plot for partial regression (in spss)

    Hi all

I have an SPSS regression model in which I have a dependent variable, an independent variable and 4 covariates.

I want to create a scatter plot for the dependent and independent variables WHILE CONTROLLING for my covariates (the way I understand the default SPSS scatter plot that is created in the regression, it plots the dependent against the combined model of the independent+covariates).

I tried computing the residuals of regressing the covariates out of the dependent, regressing the covariates out of the independent and then doing a simple regression between the two new variables, but the beta value that comes out is different from the beta I get from the overall model when I look at just my independent variable (i.e
    controlling for the covariates).

I looked everywhere for a solution...any help will be tremendously appreciated!!! Thanks
