What type of test should I use?

I am trying to determine whether being involved in an extracurricular activity has an impact on different course grades (dependent variable), controlling for various things including course type (math, science, etc.). I have a data set with each different course on a different row. The course gpas are not normally distributed and I don't know how to transform them so that they are. I have a feeling the issue is because the course GPA is not on a scale, but rather is it ordinal (4.0, 3.67, 3.33, etc.). Any advice on which statistical test to run?

Have you tried standardizing the GPA grades so they are expressed in percentage terms. i.e. if a GPA of 4.0 is the maximum divide the GPA by 4.
What have you tried to normalize the GPAs? Log transformations?
Can you post your regression results?

Build a (non-)linear model with non-normal distributions suggested by exploratory analysis on your data set and run the likelihood ratio test for the sensitivity / parameter of interest.
