    Variable vs. Constant Question

    Hey guys,

I'm a first time poster and was having some difficulty with a STATS question in my homework. I hope this is an appropriate place to post this...

We are working with this thing called the Sesame Street Data Base (not sure if it will be familiar) and one of the questions revolves around whether the site of the subject is a constant or a variable. I understand that a constant stays the same no matter what and a variable is a number that will have a tendency to change.

For the site of the subject, there are five different sampling sites that are coded as 1, 2, 3, 4, and 5. This is where I run into problems. Each subject is one of the numbers depending on their location in the USA and they cannot change sites or numbers. However because there are 5 different options would this make it a variable because there are a total of 5 different input options?

Thank you for any help you can provide...

sampling sites, what do you mean? are there more than 5 sites, or you know that there are only 5 sites (of interest)? can you be a bit more specfic. it sounds like a constant but we 'll see.

The Sesame Street Survey that we're dealing with studies the effects of the Sesame Street television show on youth. This study takes into consideration five different parts of the United States. These five different parts are the different sites and are numbered 1-5 with each site being assigned one of the numbers. The question is asking whether or not the SITE of the subject is a constant or variable. Hope that helped.

if you are interested only in these five SITES it is a constant. If you chose 5 out of more SITES (randomly of course) it is a variable. Clear now?
