    observed value of z

What is an observed value of z? Why it is called an "observed" value? I think we all calculate it by using the formula but not observe (notice or watch) it?

"Observed" typically refers to something that is actualized in the course of an experiment or study. An observed z-statistic would be one calculated from the real, actualized data you collected. This is contrasted with the unobserved values that are theoretically possible but that you did not generate as a function of your data. There may be a more technical explanation, but this is how I conceptualize it.
