    Post urgent question on the mode, median, variance and mean

    We roll two (unbiased) dice and let X and Y be the two numbers that appear. Find
    the mode, the median, the expectation, and the standard deviation of
    a. max {X,Y}
    b. |X − Y|.

    I struggle with finding the probabilities

    hi,
    in both cases you can build a table with all possible outcomes ( from (1,1) to (6,6)) and calculate the values of the required function for each possible case. E.g. for (1,1) the max is 1 and the abs difference is 0. Then just count with what frequency each value appears in the outcome column and you have your distribution - then use it to calculate the mean, the median etc.

    regards
