    Dealing with 0 values

Please help me with this simple thing I am having issues with. I am writing my thesis working with predators and I am trying to find their switching behavior when each predator have two preys following the attached instructions (PDF) but when E1 or E2 are 0, I can't get a preference index. I have tried adding 1 to them but I think it is wrong because when I add 1 to 0 values immediately I am assuming that there are some preference when there wasn't . Then when I am able to get the preference index I will compare them with ANOVA
    Thanks a lot
