    how to proceed

Hi, thanks for your great sense of help

I have data that compare the effect of contrast media used in angiography on kidney function. There are patients who develop renal failure after the procedure. Now I want to test different factors that may contribute to this, these include ( diabetes, hypertension, age, ***,etc..
Using spss, how to conduct which factor/factors is associated and the the significance of factor/factors concerned.

    Thanks a lot

I need a clarification. Is your dependent variable whether or not they develop kidney failure? Or is it a continuous measure of kidney function only in patients who develop kidney failure?

    Thanks for your reply

Yes, the dependent variable is whether or not they develop kidney failure?

and if they develop it, what factors are likely significantly associated

I appreciate very much your help

    Thanks, yes, that helps.

You will need to do binary logisitic regression. It's in SPSS under regression-->binary.

If you're totally new to logistic regression, I would start by doing some reading. These are three good introductory explanations:

DeMaris, Alfred. (1995). A Tutorial in Logistic Regression. Journal of Marriage and Family, 57, 956-968.
Menard, Scott. (1995). Applied Logistic Regression Analysis. Sage Publications, Thousand Oaks, CA.
Morgan, S. Philip & Teachman, Jay D. (1988). Logistic Regression: Description, Examples, and Comparisons. Journal of Marriage and the Family, 50, 929-936.
