    Smile null and alternate hypotheses

    His agent claims that the average speed of a fastball thrown by pitcher Moe M. Down is 90 mph. If the average speed of 64 randomly selected fastballs is 88 mph with a standard deviation of 2.6 mph, should we reject the agent's claim?

    H0: mu = 90

    H1: mu < 90

    a: usually set at .05

    RR: rejection region?

    using the normal distribution, compute z = (x-mu)/(s/sqrt(n)) and compare it to the z score for an "a" or "alpha" of .05

    z = (88-90)/(2.6/sqrt(64))
