Averaging percentiles

#1
Hello everyone,

I am new to this forum and do not have a strong Statistical background.

Recently I had to deal with the issue of averaging of percentiles.

I noticed that in the transcripts of its students, my school is displaying the percentile in each subject and ultimately the percentile of the GPA. So far so good.

However, the percentile of the GPA within the cohort is calculated by doing a weighted average of the percentiles in all of the individual courses.

Isn't that a mistake? Wouldn't it be more precise to do a distribution of the GPAs of all students in the cohort and then calculate the percentile of each student based on that distribution, rather than calculating a weighted average of the percentiles in all courses of that student.

I would really appreciate some insight on the matter since my Stats knowledge is limited.
