Best software statistical distributions

R is the best statistical software for nearly any problem. ;) If you want to estimate distribution parameters from a data set, take a look at the fitdistr() function in the MASS package, which is available from CRAN (and may well already be installed with your copy of R if you have it.)

While I love R and my prior probability of recommending R no matter what they replied was pretty high I still like to know what exactly somebody is going to be doing. There might be something out there that is tailored a lot more to their problem.

But you're totally right and R rocks.
