Changing a likert scale (1-5 to 1-10)

Quick question:

I have a questionnaire that has been used to measure PROFESSIONALISM and has been designed using a 1-5 likert scale (strongly disagree to strongly agree).

I am going to be using this questionnaire longitudinally, so I am afraid of ceiling effects. I want to change the scale from 1-5 to 1-10.

What are the implications of this? If someone can point me in the right direction that would be great! Thanks :)

More response options sound great, but can you really think of 10 adjectives describing level of agreement that are more-or-less evenly spaced from each other in level of agreement? ;)

How about a Visual Analog Scale (i.e. a line on which participants mark their response) that varies from complete agreement to complete disagreement?
Hi CowboyBear,

Thanks for your response to this post. Your right - sorry I should have said I intended to use a visual anologue scale like you mentioned. This should be a nice way around it I reckon. Thanks! :)
