HELP- Cumulative meta-analyses conceptual question!

Based on the premise that cumulative meta-analysis is a "chronological combining of the experiments will show if there is a consistency in the results of consecutive experiments and indicate the point at which no further experiments are necessary because the results continually favor one process, product or treatment." Is it necessary that the experiments are analyzed consecutively? If the purpose is to determine which treatment is the better choice, why can't cumulative meta-analysis just be done without the need of a time order?
