Likert scale problem

Hello,

I am studying writing apprehension (WA) and have used Daly and Miller's (1975) Writing Apprehension Scale (WAS) -- a 5 point Likert scale -- to assess the WA of my participants. My problem is that various researchers over the years have adapted the number of Likert scale points from 5 to 6 or 4, thereby eliminating the central option so as to "force" an opinion. For my study I opted to use a 4 point scale but now have run into the problem of how to compare my 4-point scale results with 5 or 6 point scales. Is it possible to compare exactly similar surveys which, nevertheless, employ a "differently pointed" :) Likert scale? Any help will be GREATLY appreciated.
