Paired sample t test vs Wilcoxon signed ranks test

As part of assessment, we are using a five-question multiple choice pretest and posttest. We have been using the Wilcoxon signed ranks test to analyze these data. Of course, this test does ignore tied scores and focuses only on changes, and there can be quite a few ties.

Is it legitimate to use a paired samples t test for these data? I thought that perhaps due to the low range of possible scores (0,1,2,3,4, or 5) for each test, a nonparametric test is best, but any advice would be appreciated.

If your data fulfill the assumptions of a paired sample t-test (e.g. normal distribution, sample size of 30), then it is appropriate.
