Really new at this - need help

Hello friend,

I al 18 years old and taking a bio stat class. I have never taken stats and I;m really poor in math.

Could someone help break down the steps for me to get the answer in a basic format? I would like to view someone else's work to see if I am on the right track.

Calculate these 2 questions and demonstrate the steps to obtain the answer.
question one
(4 3 - 12 / 4) + (6 × 4 - 5 2) =
(note the "3" and the "2" after the 5 should be in superscript)

question two
(9 - √ 16) × (5 2 - 5 + 4) =
(note the "2" next the 5 should be in superscript- I can't get the keyboard to do it in superscript)

I am really bad at this. Thank you immensely

Math is done in certain accepted steps. Parentacees always come first, then you do multiplication and division before addition or subtraction. In the first example you do what is in the first and second parentaccess separarely then add them. Using the first parentacees first, you would divide 12/4 first since that is division and then add this (3) to 43. The second parentacess is similar. You multiply 6*4 then subtract 52 from it. The result is added to your calculation in the first parentacees.

The other problems are done the same way.

I have another question. Please bear with me.
Using the following observations, how do I calculate question one and two where n=4
X_1=5, X_2=6, X_3=8, X_4=7
Y_1=4, Y_2=4, Y_3=6, Y_4=8

question one

Not sure what they are asking here. I think that the first question is simply asking you to sum the x values-4 for each one. So you would for example sum 5-4, 6-4, 8-4 and 7-4. Why you are doing this is unclear [I thought it might be used for generating a mean or standard deviation, but it is not). i=1 in this case simply means you sum the values starting with 1 (that is X_1) and ending with the last value (X_4).

I am not sure what symbol you are using in question two. If it is supposed to be Σ then you do it the same way as question 1.
