repeated measure ANOVA, are comparisons at different time points independent?

#1
Hi, i have been set the task to critically analyse a research paper > http://wageningenacademic.metapress.com/content/5065134j5v339382/fulltext.pdf

but have no background in statistical analysis, i have found some lecture notes that are helpful but am uncertain about the following issue.

In figure one of this paper change in body weight (%) (presumably from base line and not day to day) is plotted against time (weeks) for the test and control groups of mice. Am i right in thinking that calculating an area under the curve for each group would have been more appropriate given that comparisons at each time point are not independent of each other?

Any help here would be greatly appreciated!
