Unsure of which test to use!

If I want to assess the effects of a number of different factors such as sex, income etc on exam results which statistical test should I use? I have tried searching on the internet but end up getting a little confused by everything.

Sounds like a good situation for multiple regression.

if the factors are qualitative and the response continuous quantitative then wouldn't ANOVA be the correct method to use?

Possibly, but you wouldn't be incorrect if you used regression - ANOVA is simply a special case of regression...

yeah, I don't really get the link between anova, regression, ancova and glims. stats is confusing. i have no idea why i study it.
