The Smallville Daily wants the number of pages of its paper that are really read by the 1000 citizens who take a copy. The company then randomly selects 60 citizens and counts the number of pages read by these citizens. From this count they find the average number of pages read.

1. Provide a proof that this sample average is an unbiased estimator of the population mean.

2. If the sample average is 4, and the sample variance is 16, conduct a test of the hypothesis that the population average is 5 or larger. (You may select your own standard of confidence.Write down the maintained hypothesis, the alternative, the distribution of the test statistic under the null hypothesis, and the decision rule; conduct the test.))
